German TV Club Recap

In June, we “traveled to Germany” to speak German with Das Letzte Wort on Netflix.

A big thank you goes to our guest host Etai from Etai's Corner. He did a marvelous job navigating the tricky topics presented in this show and supporting everyone with complete vocabulary notes.

Who attended?

We had 6 people total who signed up for German month. These attendees represented 3 different countries. Some attendees were new and some were TV club veterans.

Topics/Themes:

We discussed a range of topics, some planned and some spontaneous, including:

  • Death/funerals

  • Grieving

  • Therapy

  • Relationships/family

  • Jobs

  • Cats! (lots of members had cats who wanted to join the chat)

Personal review of the show:

Das Letzte Wort is a show about a woman and her family, who have just lost their father/husband. The woman then tries out a job as a eulogist. I'm not sure if this helped her in the grieving process or hindered her. The family members also go through their own journeys. Along the way, we meet other families who have lost someone and learn their stories.

The show is not completely sad, however, as it does have a comical note, including such things as a grandmother who sells drugs and a boyfriend who is, literally, a clown. I would say it is not my favorite show I've ever watched, but it is the first German show I've watched!

What did members have to say?

“I thought it went well! It took me about halfway through to feel more comfortable and natural with my speaking."

"People have different perspectives and lived experiences which affects how they view a series."

“There was good conversation and the prepared questions were very helpful."

Would you recommend Language TV Club to others? 100% of those who responded: YES

Thank you so much for the kind words. It was an honor to moderate such a wonderful group. The whole -- as they say -- is so much greater than the sum of its parts and that's where the magic happens!
